Are you prone to analysis paralysis?

If yes, be careful with Dominations. I mentioned in a previous post how many things you have to think over each turn, and I wanted to go more into detail about that. It all begins on the very first turn when you have to place a tile. 😄

🧐In an ideal round you want to place a tile in a way so you can both build a city and get a new mastery card, while also steering yourself towards fulfilling your goal card (which is quite hard to accomplish). This will get easier as the game goes on and your tech tree grows, as you will have some income and boosted resource generation. You’ll have more cities too, that you can re-activate for bonus resource generation.

But which of your triangle tiles do you place, where, and in what orientation? 🙀 Trying to match colored dots on the edges is generally worth it because you get a bonus resource, but you also have to watch out so you don’t hit your resource limit and lose out on gains. It’s good to have cities of every color so your limits are higher – this is also crucial to get more expensive mastery cards as their costs are higher than your starting limits allow. You really have to think of what type of city you want to build and what mastery card to snatch, and then try to find the matching triomino to achieve that. This can be a difficult endeavor! 😅 We really needed around 2 full games until we started grasping what makes a good decision and how to achieve what we want.

To add even more spice to this, you could forgo building a city and construct a part of a monument. ☝️These have all kinds of costs according to their cards, which fit into your tech tree alongside your mastery cards. Everyone can contribute to the same monument, but there is a majority aspect to owning it. And did I mention you can also upgrade existing cities or flip mastery cards to their advanced side?

All this should give you a taste of what makes Dominations so complex! 🙃

As mentioned before, all this thinking leads to a long playtime, but in the end it’s all worth it because it is really satisfying if you manage to pull things off. 🥰
