Zombies & Superheroes
We finally had our first foray into Zombicide 🧟 - the co-operative game about fighting an onslaught of zombie hordes. There are several versions of Zombicide on the market now (CMON is basically printing money with this IP 😂). We just played the new 🎯Marvel Zombies: X-Men Resistance. This is a standalone expansion to Marvel Zombies, which features some iconic X-Men, some as heroes, some as zombies. Unfortunately, if you want to play the Zombie mode, where you play as zombies, you need components from the box of Marvel Zombies.
The gameplay might be familiar if you’ve played other similar miniature games. 🧐 You set up a specific scenario from the book, then start playing. Regardless of player count, you’ll have to play 4 characters, though there are added rules to play with 5-6. Each round players have a few action points to spend on actions, trying to accomplish the scenario objective, while overcoming an endless charge of zombies. A thing I like is how players can activate their heroes in any order they see fit. After each player is finished, the zombies will activate, then new zombies will join the fray. ⚔️
Other than moving and attacking (which you’ll most often be doing), you can use the powers specific to your hero, or gain trait cards for their one-off effect. As you defeat zombies you gather XP, unlocking more skills, but there’s a catch: ☝️the power of zombies will scale with the heroes’ XP level: so the stronger you get, the more zombies will spawn in future rounds. 😱
As there are always legions of zombies crawling around, you’ll be attacking them a lot - which means lots of dice rolls 🎲 to decide your success. Ultimately whether you’ll enjoy this game or not comes down to 2 things in my opinion: 1️⃣ do you like rolling dice, and 2️⃣ can you fully immerse yourself in the theme and miniatures? In usual CMON fashion, the miniatures look exquisite which helps with the immersion. If you are a painter, even better!
To be honest, I just feel like the decision space provided by the game isn’t interesting enough, and however beautiful the game is - it still couldn’t turn us (pun intended 😉).
