Why we love Inventors
I really enjoy the arc of ⚙️ Inventors of the South Tigris. 🥰 As you play you organically unlock an additional camel dice slot and a worker as you pass at the end of rounds, but there is more engine building going on. Sailing along the river you can claim new tiles for your workshop rows. These can be activated if you use the appropriate dice to generate all kinds of things. You can also research technologies that give you even more special abilities. It’s fun synergistically building your workshops and technologies. 🙂 Read our previous post here:
There is always a lot to do, and while your dice 🎲 pool is limited, your camel 🐪 dice slots are the biggest bottleneck. You will only be able to do 3 (or later 4) of the main actions in a round - and you’ll definitely feel you want to do more. 😅 As you invent and build machines you also choose specific end game goals which you try to hand-tailor to your strategy together with the workshops and techs. 👍
A really well-made mechanism is the use of Craftspeople 🔧 to pay for certain actions. You have a tower made up of 5 tiles/levels that show how much a Craftsperson costs. Whenever you use them they go up the tower, gathering expertise. Every time the lowest level is empty you get a bonus and flip that tile to the top of the tower, also improving your income. You keep having to refresh used Craftspeople too, which require specific actions.
The biggest negative I see in Inventors is how low dice values don’t have many uses. When you activate exhausted dice you have to roll them and bigger values are always better, so it can feel bad if you often get unlucky. I wish there were more specific uses for 1s and 2s. Of course there are multiple ways to improve values. Another thing that you also see in Paladins or Wayfarers is the weird table space requirement due to the wide and thin board. 😄
Otherwise the game is really fun to play, engaging from the first minute till the last. Timing is important and managing your dice and craftspeople is an enjoyable and constant challenge. There are always a couple of ways to achieve things, which is something I always love in good euros. ☺️
