Voidfall is here!

One of our most anticipated Kickstarters has arrived on Saturday: Voidfall! 🥳 Of course we just had to play it immediately. @mindclash_games is releasing some exceptional and very thematic euros, and we are big fans of them. This time Voidfall was designed by David Turczi and Nigel Buckle - the duo who brought us Imperium Classic and Legends! And the art is by none other than Ian O’Toole, who did an amazing job as always. 🤩

To say that this is a beast of a game is an understatement. 🙀 Unboxing and organizing every component into the mountain of GameTrayz took like 2 hours. Everything is gorgeous and of phenomenal quality: double and triple-layered boards, dials, metal enamel tokens, plastic spaceships and so much more. 😍

Setup was a similar endeavor, though that will go much faster now that we know what each component is. Learning the game however is a daunting task - the game also has a whopping 4.5 complexity rating on BGG (out of 5), but I have read that it’s actually not that complex. As you open the box you do meet with 3 different thick rulebooks: 🫣 luckily one of these is only an index of every card and faction in the game, and the second is mostly showing different setups for every player count. 🙏

For now we have only slightly dipped our toes into Voidfall by checking out the tutorial, but we love it so far. 🥰 And I can already see that although learning took a lot of time, remembering the rules won’t be difficult - there is a TON of icons too, but they all make sense (thanks Ian O’Toole!).

Replayability should be through the roof with this game: multiple possible setups, an engaging action selection system powered by cards, different event cards and scoring opportunities through agenda cards, various available technologies, and 14 (!!) different asymmetric player factions! 😵‍😁

I also want to touch on the maybe controversial design decision of the game which I actually like: combat is completely deterministic! No dice rolls, no cards played. So it’s more about anticipating when and where combat occurs and how you prepare for it, instead of not knowing what the outcome will be. 👌
