Unlimited potential?
You might be seeing a lot of ⚔️ Star Wars: Unlimited in the coming days. It’s a new trading card game from Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee, and as you might know TCGs are always surrounded by a lot of hype. People opening booster packs and finding all kinds of rare and legendary cards, stuff like that. If you are wondering what makes Unlimited different and how it works, I’m here to shed a light on that! 😉
And why not start with the most unique feature: 👉 Alternating activation ‼️
Players only do one thing on their turn, then play passes to the other, doing this until both of you run out of things to do and pass. This way you have more dynamic gameplay and more chances to react than in other TCGs. For me this way the game is a step closer to euros in a way, because everything is nicely split into rounds and turns. 🙃
Instead of using some currency to play cards, you will discard cards each round as “resources”. You can only use those to pay for other cards, and it makes for some fun decisions as you keep having to choose what to get rid of.
The battleground itself is split up into two: ✌️ one half for ground forces and one for spaceships. Units can only be played to their specific battleground and can only interact with cards there, which makes things more interesting and thematic. The goal is to destroy the base of the opponent by dealing enough damage to it. 💥
🃏Decks are made up of at least 50 cards, and have 1 base and 1 leader. Leaders have a special power but can also enter the game as a strong unit if its condition is met. You can theoretically put any card in a deck, but if they have aspect symbols that aren’t on your base or leader, they will cost more to play, so you are better off trying to home in on specific themes with just a few symbols. 🧐 Cards have a bunch of information on them - besides aspects, cost, attack/life there are also special keyword abilities or tags that are sometimes referenced by other cards.
Thanks to the alternating activation I think Star Wars Unlimited is fun to play. For now I’m curious to see how popular it gets, and how it fares against TCGs - new and old.
