United against the Voidborn

🌌Voidfall… What a beast of a game! Playing when you know the rules seems relatively simple, but actually learning the rules is a monstrous undertaking. Funnily we learned and played the game when it was first fulfilled, then recently played again like two months ago, yet we had to again relearn some stuff when playing over the Christmas break. 😄 This is a game that you either play at most once a year, or very often, because both setup and refreshing rules takes a lot of time. But it is absolutely worth it, because the gameplay is so captivating. 🤩

We were already fans of Voidfall, but playing the co-op version now really opened up the game. 🥰 It feels superior like it was meant to be solo or co-op. As the game is very heavy, it feels good to be able to ask and discuss things, or to decide who takes which tech and expands in which direction. Especially as you have to plan really well turns in advance with your action cards, it is ideal if no one ruins your short term goals or strategy. 👍

The core of the co-op mode is beat-your-own-score 🏆, where the point threshold goes up not just with difficulty, but with bad stuff that you failed to clear off the board. You also have to all individually reach the specific point amount, so you have to help each other when possible. However that is luckily not all, another element comes in to spice things up! 🌶️

And that is the crisis board! As you play you will keep drawing crisis cards. These show specific things you have to do, or resources you have to spend in addition to complete. As long as you don’t complete them, they take up space on the board, making coming Wars more difficult. If there is no more space for cards you get a Catastrophe token, and getting the 4th one is an instant losing condition! 😱 Every now and then War will occur instead of a crisis, where each player has to spend resources and fend off a Voidborn skirmish. ⚔️

Completing these crisis cards can be done by anyone, so this is another avenue where you can discuss and plan as a team. And teamwork makes Voidfall into an even more fun game, even when I thought it couldn’t get better. ☺️
