To the shore and beyond!
There are quite a few đłEverdell titles out there, and you might be wondering: âWhat is Everdell Farshore?â Well, if you missed the loud social media campaign that stirred up every kind of emotion when it launched last year: itâs a standalone game that isnât compatible with any of the previous expansions, but it has some tweaks on the standard Everdell formula. A direct comparison to the basic Everdell comes in a followup post, now letâs just see what makes this game tick. đ
Farshore is a tableau-building worker-placement game, with a big focus on resource management. You all start out with 2 workers, which really doesnât seem like a lot, but you will unlock more as seasons go by. I think this tightness of workers and spots for them make all the planning of turns and your tableau really engaging. There are always a bunch of cards that are interesting to you, and you have to find the most optimal way to victory - having the most points at the end of course. đ
The tableau-building is really fun. On your turn you either place a worker (usually to get resources), or you play a card by paying its costs and activate its effect, if applicable. There is a restriction that the city you are building can only contain 15 cards. âïž You can quickly fill it up with cheap cards, but then you wonât be able to play more, and this doesnât end the game for anyone. This is an unusual thing which I personally enjoy. Everyone plays seasons until they pass and others cannot rush me out of my pre-planned combo! So you have to plan accordingly! đ
There are 5 types of cards which have: instant effects, income, worker spots, ongoing effects and end-game scoring effects. All of them are useful and there are also objectives that make you race for collecting specific types.
The best thing about Everdell games is the cute animal theme. đ„° The critters and their construction come alive thanks to the amazing illustrations. The resource and point tokens are awesome, making managing them much more fun! And in spite of this cuteness, you get an engaging crunchy euro experience.
