The never-ending tranquility

Last week I went into the tranquil nature of Mythwind, and how it is an open-ended game, where you just play for your enjoyment 😊 - developing the town in the magical valley and improving your character. I didn’t say anything about the characters themselves however, even though they are undoubtedly the most essential part of the game! They all have their own mechanics and rule booklets, so they are very much different.

You could play as the 💰 Merchant, trying to buy goods at low prices and sell them for more. You have to watch as the supply and demand ebbs and flows, and also compete with rival merchants, who are controlled by AI decks.

The 🛠️ Crafter gathers materials and improves them in an effort to make items, to be able to fulfill contracts of the townsfolk, and thus increase your reputation in town.

The 🧭 Ranger explores the uncharted lands around the town. You always spend a few turns in town, preparing for your next expedition, then spend the next several turns in the wilderness, managing your equipment as you face the dangers of your journey.

I was pondering for a long time which character to play as. Finally, I decided to channel my inner Uwe Rosenberg, so I went with the 🌾Farmer! 😄 As I chose this one, I can go into a bit more details. It’s listed as the lowest complexity character, but there are quite some things going on. It’s mostly a polyomino puzzle, as you plant vegetables and harvest them for money, but you can optimize a lot on your farm.

With your first 3 actions you can plant new polyomino tiles into your garden, flip tiles to their ripe side so they are worth more, and harvest them for money.
The fourth and fifth actions are somewhat interconnected: you can buy, sell, move and breed cattle on your farm, which are also needed to power equipment tiles you can buy. Equipment tiles will make your farm much more fruitful, as they can trigger bonus actions to interact with adjacent spaces. Money you earn will often go into investing in these, so you can earn even more money! 😁
