The funniest Love Letter version

The funniest Love Letter version

I have to confess, when I first saw đŸ±Power Hungry Pets on a table at the Asmodee booth at Spielwarenmesse in Nuremberg I thought: “meh, is this another version of Exploding Kittens?” - but upon closer inspection we’ve found out that it is actually a Love Letter spin-off game! 😼 I find the silly-punny art and theme of Exploding Kittens amazing, even if the basic card game isn’t a masterclass in game design, so I was happy to have a new take on Love Letter (which is an exquisite game) with this funny theme. 😁

If you know Love Letter, you can basically start playing, though there are some new cards here. If you don’t know the game, here is a very quick rundown: 🧐 each player holds a card in their hand. The active player draws a second card and has to play 1 of their 2 cards, possibly targeting someone. Play continues like this clockwise around the table. The goal is to either be the last one who wasn’t eliminated, or to have the highest numbered card when the deck (with only 21 cards!) runs out. Sounds simple, but the abilities of the cards make this such a worthwhile experience, with guesses, bluffs and laughs every time.

If you’ve never played any of the Love Letter games, it’s not easy to convey how good it is, you really have to see the cards and experience it yourself. Card abilities involve peeking at, guessing, comparing or discarding cards, all with the goal of knocking out others. For example, having the 10-value Cat King is both good and frightening - at the end of the round you can win (except if someone has the 0-value Royal Robo Vacuum 😂), but it’s dangerous during the round because you lose if you ever play it. Finding out what cards people have is essential, but of course they keep drawing new ones!

The heart of the fun is how quick rounds in the game go by. 🙂 Even if you get unlucky and get immediately eliminated, you won’t have to wait much more than a minute or two, and it’s always funny even just spectating others. And restarting a round just means shuffling 21 cards together and going again! Power Hungry Pets is definitely a worthy addition to our Love Letter collection! đŸ„°
