The joy of discovery

We just saw Fire & Stone was recently released and decided to order it, even though we didn’t know much about it. After trying it we were pleasantly surprised.

The best part of the game is the joy of discovery, not knowing what each tile holds. We also like the quick, fast-paced gameplay, the replayability and the nice graphic design coupled with an attractive price tag. It also works well with 2p.
It is definitely a keeper.

How the game works:
On a turn you move your scout 1 or 2 spaces then do an action according to the place you landed on. Later everyone gets a second scout, but the turns will still go very fast.

During setup tiles get placed randomly on the board (numbered I, II and III depending on the continent). The most important of these tiles are the hut-tiles. If you land on one of those it gets placed on the hut-track. As the hut-track gets filled up with hut tiles the ability to traverse to II and III tiles is unlocked. At the 5th tile everyone gets their second scout, and the 11. hut tile triggers the game’s end. You also get to place one of your huts on the space you found the tile. This becomes a settlement.

Huts are the main way of earning points during the game. You use food – the only resource in the game - to build them on previously started settlements.

You also find 4 types of gather tiles. Using a set collection mechanism you can exchange these for invention cards. Inventions grant you passive abilities that aid you in different ways. Alternatively you could exchange for point cards. These cover the abilities of previously acquired inventions (rendering them useless).

There are of course more things to the game which I will not describe here, but I hope you could get a glimpse into Fire & Stone.

At the game’s end you get points for your huts, relative majority in settlements, point cards and your personal goal card which you get at setup.
