The beautiful greens of forests and plants

🌲Canopy Evergreen is a nature themed gateway game about building a forest. The presentation deserves an immediate mention: it is beautiful thanks to the skilled hands of Vincent Dutrait. 🤩 During the game players each have to create a forest in a synergistic way with cards that symbolize the weather, trees, plants and animals that inhabit it.

The driving force of Canopy Evergreen is a creative push-your-luck inspired card drafting mechanic! 🙂 Depending on the player count there will be some card piles on the table. On your turn you can check up to 3 piles, deciding after each pile whether you want to take all of its cards - if not, you add a random facedown card on top, so it becomes a more attractive choice for the future.

So why wouldn’t you just go for the biggest pile every time? 🤔 Because it might not have what you are specifically looking for, or due to disaster cards! As you have to take every card of a pile, you would also have to take wildfire, heatwave or disease cards. 😱

You can gather plant 🌱 cards, each with a special effect or set collection rules. Trees 🌳  can be built from roots, trunks and canopies - as you finish them you score them and you can unlock helpful tokens from your board. Sun ☀️ and rain 💧 icons are scored in pairs so want both.

You can also buy an animal 🐾 card from a display each turn if you have the food to pay for it. These have either a once-per-round ability or will score points in some way. They also have 2 types of set collection aspects. 😉

Each round of the game lasts until the deck of cards runs out. After scoring your tableaus you discard all your cards (except for the animals), so you start the next round from scratch again. The game ends after 3 such rounds.

💭The game is fairly quick, flows smoothly and it is easy to grasp.😉We really enjoyed our plays so far. Peeking at the piles and deciding whether you want those cards is not a super hard decision, but brings just the right amount of excitement and a fun dilemma. The wonderful graphics help it all feel that much more fun to play as your forest comes together. ☺️
