Spiel 2024 recap - Day 4
Day 4 of Spiel went by too. Even though so much happens during these convention days, with so much walking, talking, waiting and playing, it all seems so short afterwards. 😶 Sunday itself was very relaxed - I think it is always the least stacked day, but this year especially so! Due to the national holiday on Thursday, the first half of the convention was really busy.
This year’s Spiel felt a bit different for us. (Amazing nonetheless of course. 🥳) I think mostly because we spent much of our time meeting with many publishers we are collaborating with, and that we were lucky to receive some of the games just before the convention, so the usual Thursday “hunt” wasn’t that excruciating - also thanks to how some games could be pre-ordered beforehand. 😉
To begin the day we sat down to 🏰 Beyond the Horizon from Cranio, which is basically a medieval version of 🚀 Beyond the Sun. The core is the same: a shared tech-tree that is made up as players play and make choices. The game was fun, it is a bit different, yet very much similar to the original. Which one you'll prefer will boil down to your preferences of theme or aesthetics.
🍣 Gimbap from Korea Boardgames is an upcoming dexterity game that really charmed us. You will roll dice that determine how to roll up the foam layers of the sushi-like gimbap and how to add the wooden vegetable sticks. After rolling it is a race to finish first. 😁 A velcro-like outer “seaweed” layer will hold it all together.
We wanted to try out 🐈⬛ Cat-A-Comb from Thundergryph Games , a game from their tin can series. It is an abstract with a very small footprint, using a mancala mechanic to move around cat cubes on the modular board to get into a winning position. We love it!
We also saw a few Sunday discounts (like Autobahn for 15€ 🤯), and we almost stayed strong, until we bumped into the 🏛️ Monumental Duel discount. 😂 We were hesitating about buying it the whole day, as we already had so many games in the car - but the final afternoon discount turned out to be irresistible. We also played it again in the evening, and it was fun getting to actually finish a game, and we want to play the game a lot more!
