Spiel 22 Preview IV.

In this issue of our Spiel hype series we are highlighting some of the games we actually played during GenCon that weren’t for sale yet. 🙃

🚀 Starship Captains

We really enjoyed Starship Captains a lot. It is quite light but fast and fun, with cool components and a theme invoking Star Trek. The action selection involves spending your colored workers from your ship and putting them back into a queue to get back later. Get upgrades, hunt pirates, collect medals and goods and fulfill missions!

😈 Deal with the Devil

We quite liked this one too - a resource management euro game where you use your workers to plan actions, use event cards to your advantage, build buildings and optimise your income - all while trading with the other players. One is a cultist and one is the devil, so there are some social deduction elements mixed in. I’m afraid it will be a tough sell because the game only plays with 4 players 🙀.

🦇 Atiwa

The newest Uwe game is #atiwawesome . In typical Uwe Rosenberg fashion you fill your player board with different resources and families, which you of course have to be able to feed too. Though it uses standard worker placement, there are still quite some new ideas in this one, and you have to make careful decisions all game. And it has bat meeples! 🦇

🌖 Skymines

This one we already pre-ordered after a full playthrough. It’s a re-theme of Mombasa from Alexander Pfister and it has a lot of things going for it. An interesting card based action planning system, worker placement with extra pawns, an interactive area control element with neutral factions, dynamically changing values of the stocks you have in companies depending on their standing on the board, and going up different tracks which unlock special abilities and end game points. All of this intertwined masterfully. 👌
