Rock-paper-scissors as a board game?!
Rubber Paper Scissors is an unusual little 2-player game. Basically you could say it is ‘Rock-Paper-Scissors: The Board Game’, and while that might sound weird, it’s surprisingly fun! When checking the rules we sat there with furrowed brows, not knowing what to expect really, but during play we found ourselves smiling and laughing at the absurdity of it all - in a good way. 😄
There is a tiny game board with a 3x3 grid. You mix the tokens of the game and put 1 facedown and 1 faceup token on each of the spaces. Then the game begins! 😁
Essentially you will play a match of rock-paper-scissors for all 9 spaces of the grid, playing until ties are resolved. The winner will be able to choose a reward: either placing their colored piece on the grid space or taking one of the tokens from the setup. Then the loser chooses one of these, then the winner does the last thing. So the winner always gets 2 of 3 rewards. After the 9 rounds of rock-paper-scissors you just count up points to see who wins. 🏆
Tokens can be flat victory points, or one of three items that you do set collection with, but funnily, having 4 of a kind is worse than having 3, which makes going for a set of 5 risky.
Tokens could also be crowns: if you get all 3 you just instantly win the game.
For a bit of a twist, actually not every token is in play, and you don't know which ones are missing.
💬 Otherwise there is a tic-tac-toe aspect to the game with your colored player pieces. For each row, column or diagonal you complete you get bonus points. This is where a little strategy comes into this hectic little game - when do you take a token and which type, or where do you place pieces. Of course if you lose every single round you won’t really have a chance to win at all, but knowing there is a crown for the taking makes some rounds more important (and thus stressful) to win, which elevates the fun of rock-paper-scissors. Especially as after many rounds you start going deep into mind games, and doing 5-6 ties in a row. 😅
Like I said, a very unusual concept, but it works! Finally a party game that was made for 2 players! 🤩 👍
