Open ended board game?

Are you ready for something completely different? 🤨 Then let's talk about Mythwind from @openowlstudios ! This game does something I've only seen in video games before. It has an open end, no real final goal. You just play in this persistent world where you improve yourself and the town as seasons go by. It's just a low stress, chill co-op experience for 1-4 players. 😉

We wrote about it previously here, in case you missed out:

The never-ending tranquility
Last week I went into the tranquil nature of Mythwind, and how it is an open-ended game, where you just play for your enjoyment 😊 - developing the town in the magical valley and improving your character. I didn’t say anything about the characters themselves however, even though they are

📖 You stumble upon a mystical place that was only rumored to exist, where magical sprites 🧚 live: Mythwind Valley. As you meet these sprites they invite you to build a town and settle down, and thus a harmonic cohabitation of humans and sprites begins. An emergent storyline will unfold as you draw and read Event and Adventure cards, and make decisions.

⚙️ Gameplay itself consists of some worker placement and activating actions with dice. Actions themselves are numerous, as you will build various buildings in your town that do their own thing, and characters all have their asymmetric mini-game, rules and systems.

Game sessions are split up into Seasons, and seasons consist of 3 phases: Dawn, Daytime and Dusk.
🌅 Dawn is primarily about drawing a Weather card. The season ends when you draw the last card of the Weather deck, and these cards will drip feed you with Event cards and certain triggers. Weather can also affect the asymmetric characters in different ways.
☀️ Daytime is the core of the game. This is when you cooperatively decide what to do, what buildings to save up for and how to fulfill the current goal - and split up town actions as each space can only be visited by one player. Afterwards everyone plays their own game, choosing an action and additionally using their human and sprite workers symbolized by dice for even more actions.
🌄 Dusk is basically just a clean-up step to prepare for the next day.

Mythwind is a pretty solitary game, especially as everyone uses their own ruleset, so it’s not necessarily easy to be engaged with what others are doing - the game also recommends playing the Daytime phase simultaneously.
What you get however is indeed a very tranquil game, as you get to enjoy learning skills, improving yourself, and improving the town. 😊
