More thoughts about Beast
Let’s talk more about Beast, the hidden movement game where Hunters are trying to track and bring down a ferocious Beast that is terrorizing the lands.
For more gameplay details you can check our previous post about the game! 😉
I think there are 2 main features of Beast that sets it apart from other hidden movement games, let’s go over those! 🕵️
☝️ First is the card action selection system! Other games use cards too of course, but here you get a fun constraint 🧐 - you can play 2 cards on your turn, but one has to have a red icon and the other a blue icon. And that’s not all: there is also a closed draft for cards from a common deck, as cards have both Beast and Hunter actions on them. So when you draft you have to consider what cards you will pass on, and try to maintain a good balance of red and blue cards. So you aren’t just calculating what the opponent is doing, but also what cards to take and play.
✌️ Second thing worth highlighting is the asymmetry of the game. Every Beast and Hunter plays differently. Although Hunters only have one unique card, they all have their own unlockable abilities that can strongly influence how you play! The Beasts are even more different from one another, and this variability is always a great thing in games! 😊
One thing to mention is how the hidden movement aspect works. In other games there are often game-long chases with the goal of finding the hiding player. Here you basically have shorter bursts of hidden movement puzzles, as the Beast is often revealed when they are attacking livestock or settlers (because it is their goal), then they don’t have many ways to run away. I think this is worth knowing, as this was a bit unexpected to us. 😮 The game objectives also lead the Beast in a certain direction, which makes predicting its moves easier - and thus the Beast’s job harder.
If you are interested in Beast, you might want to check out the Gamefound campaign that is launching today not just for a reprint of Beast, but also for its first official expansion Shattered Isles, that brings new mechanics, maps, beasts, hunters, cards and contracts. 👍
I am curious to see what new things await!
