The circles of Hell are colorful

Who else is excited for Inferno? 🤩
There is a lot to say, so let’s cut right to the chase. But first, a short summary of our previous post about it: 👉The essence of the game is its action selection: move a soul in hell and perform an action that shares the symbol at the souls new location. Another important aspect is the intricate intertwining of various components: 8 circles of hell, 8 sin tracks, 8 types of souls and 8 action locations.

But what can you actually do after moving a soul? On your turn you can either send out a worker or accuse a sinner. Accusing is the most important thing in the game, as it allows you to go up on the Sin tracks, which is needed for majority and end-game scoring. However to accuse a sinner you have to have a worker already out on the location where you accuse, and then that worker goes to your tower instead of your normal supply, tying it down so you have less to use in future turns. So you can’t just accuse over and over. 🤚

The available actions are numerous but simple. There are actions that allow you to expand your tower 🏤 or organize things around in it. You can get Florins (coins) 💰 that you constantly need - mostly to convert to another type of currency, Drachmas, to pay for the more supernatural actions. You can trigger the 2 mythological creatures 👹 in hell to influence the souls or the spaces in hell. You can play Fraud cards 🃏, which require you to have the matching resource - one to trigger its instant effect, and another to trigger its end-game effect. The list goes on.

The fun comes from puzzling out how and when to do them. Doing the right actions at the right time is essential! 🧐 There is a lot of player interaction on the hell board: You have to look for good opportunities when you select which soul to move while not setting up even better options for your opponents. This is especially prevalent in a 2p game and a factor that kept us on our toes - we really enjoyed it! To be fair though, it means in 2p the game is a lot more zero-sum - if you don’t like that, I’d definitely recommend playing with 3-4 players instead.
