Let's take the bus today
There are many roll&write and flip&write games out there and it is hard to stand out from the crowd. We have seen multiple games lately that innovate by giving you multiple sheets. Today’s featured game 🚌 Get on Board - which we got as a Christmas present 🥰 - actually gives you a game board of the city you are all creating bus networks on! Pretty cool huh? 😀
In each of the 12 rounds of the game you draw a card (which looks like a bus ticket, it even has punched out holes in it! I love little touches like this 🥳) - the number on the card will tell you what shape of road you have to build, then you use your colored wooden sticks to physically build the route of your bus line on the map. There are many nuances here!
First of all, if you ever cross your own path you lose! 🙀 Just like in the mobile game Snake. 😄 So you better watch out! Also, crossing the dark streets of the inner city or crossing other people’s already placed sticks means your bus gets stuck in traffic, which will earn you negative points. 🧐 Placing your route so that it ends on a traffic light lets you place a bonus stick. 🚦 Afterwards, you cross off passengers and buildings along the new route snippet. There are 4 kinds of passengers 🙋who all score differently, but generally the more you get from the same one, the better. Then there are the buildings 🏫 that basically “activate” your passengers so they give you points. However, the sequence of when you reach certain things is really important! To help mitigate shape-randomness you can turn straights into corners or vice versa but that will also cause you to lose some points.
Add some personal and common objectives on top and you have got yourself a fun and quick flip&write that also really pops on the table thanks to the map with the colorful routes. Flip&write games are also usually multiplayer-solitaire, while here you do get a bit in each other’s way. I think Get on Board is a cool addition to any flip&write collection! 😊
