Let's follow up on that Ragnarok
I wanted to do a follow-up post on Lords of Ragnarok and explain more about what you do and how you become victorious in this futuristic norse mythological world!
After struggling through the first game it doesn’t seem that complicated, but there are a lot of steps to a turn and a lot to keep in mind. As I am trying to gather my thoughts I realize there is way too much going on in this game to summarize it all. But let’s try it anyway. 😂
You basically just play turns after each other until one of the end game triggers are reached:
Controlling 3 lands of the same color
Controlling 4-5 regions with built temples
Defeating the Boss monster
These can be achieved quite suddenly, just like a checkmate in chess, and make you win the game immediately. 🏆
There is a 4th way the game can end: if 3 of 5 Ragnarok 🌋 condition cards are fulfilled, then a final round comes and the winner is whoever controls more regions around the Yggdrasil tree.
You have a hero and armies, and you could also control roaming monsters on the board. Armies are for controlling regions on the map, and your hero can (among other things) gather runes, hunt monsters or make alliances with realms. There are different phases / actions to control these units. 🧐
Your turn is split up into multiple steps - most of these are optional, weirdly the only mandatory part is the “special action”. Not sure why it’s not called “main action” or something instead. 😄
The special actions involve placing player markers on a central wheel 🎡 - you can only do an action once, and the middle action is only choosable if you have at least a marker out already. The middle action (which builds the huge god monuments) triggers a kind of “reset” phase where everyone takes back their markers from the wheel.
With your actions you can reinforce or move armies, hunt or activate monsters, build temples, send out priests to raise your attributes and so much more. 😁
⚔️Battles between armies or between a hero and monster involve the use of multi-use combat cards, so there is no dice randomness.
I like the very tactical nature of the game, and can’t wait to play more!
We’ll definitely have to come back with more!🤩
