January recap

January recap

Time for the January recap! True to our promise of trying to shrink our shelf of shame, we have played 17 new to us games this month 💪 - well, some are we-already-played-somewhere-but-now-in-our-collection plays. This also meant lots of rules learning and slow first games, so our numbers aren’t that high, but we had fun for sure! 😁 It helps that I absolutely love reading rulebooks, and finding out how games work is a magical thing in board gaming for me. 😅

We highlight some games that made the biggest positive impressions (click the hashtags if you missed the corresponding posts!)

🧠 Mind MGMT

This logical deduction game seems to be the deduction game above all. It’s just so well made and su much fun! And the fact that it can be played competitively, cooperatively or solo just really elevates it even further!

More about Mind MGMT
We have already wrote about how brilliant 🧠 Mind MGMT is. A hidden movement game in which Rogue Agents try to take down the evil Recruiter as he is searching for new recruits for his nefarious organization. The theme is actually really fun and there are so many little easter eggs

⛰️ Oros

This is now one of our most unique games in the collection. The spatial aspect of moving landmasses and combining them is fascinating! 🤩

What we love about Oros
We have been really enjoying playing 🌋 OROS as you might have seen it already. 🥰 Being a demigod is a real blast, but how do you shape the world and create mountains and sacred temples? 🤔 Let’s look under the hood! The game is controlled by moving meeples between action spots

❄️ Endless Winter

It took some time to finally give this a real try but it became a hit. I can’t wait to get it again to the table and try out the different expansions! 🙃

Feels like January...
Let’s talk about ❄️ Endless Winter! Lately we have heard many lukewarm opinions about it. On the other hand there are those that speak of it really highly. I am definitely more on the positive side - my first impression of a solo game was not that great. Now after

🕍 The Red Cathedral

Another instant classic. As we love rondels, the rondel implementation of the resource gathering here is just phenomenal. 🥳

How about majority scoring with 2p?
Do you like majority scoring in a 2 player game? By now you should know that the rondel in Red Cathedral is brilliant, but what about its other main part, the majority scoring of the towers at the end of the game? Well it’s very tight and strict. Especially

🏣 Yokohama Roll & Write

Our newest and shiniest roll & write from Japan! It has some unique ideas that we love and they make it a real blast to play!

Let’s duel in Yokohama
We like the original Yokohama board game and love roll&write games too, so when we heard that a Yokohama Roll&Write was coming we thought it’s a match made in heaven! Unfortunately it never got released outside Japan, so that only left us with one choice: get it

🌕 Skymines

Perhaps our most complex Pfister title? I do prefer Maracaibo from him I think but this is definitely a great one.

To the skies and beyond!
We played Skymines this weekend! It is somewhat hard to get to the table, because of the time needed to set it up, but it is such a brilliant game! You might also know it as Mombasa. I know, the history-nerds among you will hate me now 😅, but I find

🏛️ Dominations

A long and abstract civ game, but the spatial thinking required for both resource gathering and building of the tech-tree makes it really engaging.

Beware the triominos!
Have you heard of 🏯Dominations🏯? To be honest I never knew much about it. Only that it looked like a cool civilization game, but I very rarely saw it mentioned anywhere. After some plays now I believe it definitely deserves more recognition and I want to highlight how it all

🔮 Hoki

It’s great having a fun game that you can grab, knock out a few games in a couple of minutes and pack away, and Hoki offers just that.

Fortune telling in solitaire
Today I have something really special to share 😊: Hoki, created by Armine and Dave from @mekmek.games, is coming to Kickstarter on 24th January! It is a small fortune telling solitaire card game to play in just about 5 minutes! This is easily my most played game in January, and
