In pursuit of the breakfast beans

In pursuit of the breakfast beans

As it turns out, we just discovered card-shedding games for ourselves this year! We have another one for you, this time from 2022:

🐵Hungry Monkey is a card-shedding game for 2-6 players. 👉 In the usual ladder climbing style, players take turns playing higher-valued cards on a central stack, aiming to get rid of all their cards before their opponents. It’s not that simple of course, as anytime someone isn’t able to place an equal or better card, they have to take the whole stack of cards into their hand. 🙀 More cards is of course bad, but the more you have, the more chance you can play something - and if you have multiples of the same card, you can play them together! 🕵️

Every now and then, the huge stack of cards in the middle will be discarded - an important mechanic, otherwise you’d play indefinitely. ☝️

Anytime 4 of the same card is on top (which is called a Gang of Four), the stack is discarded. The same happens when someone plays the most powerful ‘11’ valued Tiger card. However the question is often whether you want to discard the stack, or maybe you can hold on for a turn or two and then someone else has to take them all? 😈 That’s always a dangerous decision. 😅

Players keep redrawing to a hand size of 3 cards from the deck. After it runs out, you might be able to empty your hand. 🖐️ It’s not over though, because there is another twist: players each get 4 random facedown cards at setup, which you can only start playing when your hand is empty. 🧐 You don’t know what these are, but during the game you can use card effects to get more knowledge and prepare.

Yes, certain cards have special effects! 😉 2s and 3s let you interact with your facedown cards, or for example 7s let’s you go again, after an 8 the next player has to play an equal or lower card, and the monkey copies the value and effect of the previous card.

It’s a really enjoyable family card game with beautiful playful and vibrant art.
Easy to learn, quick to play and fun. 😊
