In An Age Contrived you play as gods of a unique pantheon, using your Transmuters to influence the mortal world, spreading faith among people and having them raise imposing monuments in your honor. 🕋 Gameplay primarily revolves around this Transmuter, as you can load in your Energy (the chunky acrylic tiles 🤩) into it, that you later use to perform actions. Tiles containing your energy move along like a conveyor belt, so you have to plan a lot in advance while trying to watch out for what other players are doing.
This action selection guarantees very engaging turns and countless fun decisions to make, and adding the expansion Folklore & Pilgrimage brings even more layers. There is now more to do, and decisions are harder to make - I guess playtime and downtime increase, but the puzzle of each turn is made more compelling at the same time. 😉
Age Contrived already felt like a complete and rounded game to me, so I wasn’t sure how the expansions would seamlessly add to that, but after playing it, I have to say I like what I see. 🙂 The most welcome changes are definitely the mechanisms that encourage movement on the map, and the additional ways to use the Recharge action which wasn’t all that interesting before. 👉Now - if you include all modules - it becomes a real dilemma to decide what to do with that action.
💬The two new characters and some of the new mechanics like the doubler tokens, scoring cards and new tracks enhance the replayability, which is welcome. It also just feels nice to get even more beautiful components - 🎨 the art is phenomenal, transporting you to an enchanting high fantasy world. The new Folklore cards also bring a bit more theme to the game with awesome illustrations. Also, building up the magnetic cardboard monuments is just always so much fun, definitely one of the coolest gimmicks in board gaming. 😁
