Duel games on the radar

Many people just scoff or shake their head when a new duel game is announced - as for me, I just say “keep ‘em coming”. Well, at least if they meaningfully improve the game for two players by introducing new mechanics, or tweaking the core of it somehow.
So in this issue of Games on the Radar let's look at some upcoming duel games! 🙃
🏭Yokohama Duel - Synapses Games
This is not really a new game, as it was first released in 2018 - however it wasn’t ever widely available, which is why it’s nice to see it released by Synapses Games. They did a great job with main Yokohama too last year! 😊 I think Yokohama works well with 2 players already, but I am interested in trying this version specifically designed for 2p. It seems like instead of the spatial puzzle of spreading out meeples on the boards, players will be using cards to activate areas, and also block those areas for the opponent, bringing a ton of interaction. I believe the core of the game should remain the same.
🏯White Castle Duel - Devir Games
Another game that I think already worked perfectly with 2p - but I won’t refuse a duel version! 😁 To be fair it actually seems like White Castle Duel will be very different from the original. There is not much info, but there will be no dice, and most of the mechanics are changed too, but (according to a press release) the tightness, theme and feel of the game should stay similar. I guess for now I am convinced, and we await the release eagerly. 👍
☕Wonderlands War Duel - Druid City Games
Wonderland’s War is a really cool game with card drafting from a rondel, bag-building, and an area control element with awesome minis and asymmetrical factions. Of course all in the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme. We only played it once at 4p, but see that it wouldn't be great at 2p - which is why a duel version would be appreciated! Keep in mind this is not Madcala, but another 2-player Wonderland game. Unfortunately I don't see any info out there yet, but can't wait to find out more. 🙉
