Defend against the endless hordes

Defend against the endless hordes

In Last Bastion 🏰 you play as a handful of heroes defending an ancient bastion against the endless hordes of the Baleful Queen, trying to hold on long enough to defeat the Warlords of her army. ⚔️

I have been checking out Ghost Stories and its spin-off game Last Bastion for a long time now, but never actually pulled the trigger. Now seeing the game new for 19 euros, I simply couldn’t resist anymore. 😲

It’s a cooperative game where you are defending a bastion made of a 3x3 grid of tiles against monsters. Each turn you will be drawing a new card from the horde deck adding it to one of the horde boards. These have all kinds of abilities that make your life worse, so you will always be changing priorities and deciding what to slay first.

During your hero phase you get to move and do one action – it could be a bastion action using one of the nine different tiles you are standing on, or a combat action trying to defeat the monsters next to you.

Combat is easily the most divisive part of the game. 🤨 It’s purely output-randomness with just a dice roll 🎲 to decide if you succeed or not. This might be a positive of the game too because it makes it really accessible. There is some room for alpha-gaming though, as sometimes there are obvious best plays to make – that makes the game perhaps better suited for solo play.

Due to the randomness you could also just cruise along without any problems until the end, then lose against the Warlord because you stopped having lucky rolls. 🤬

I am not sure about the replayability of the game yet nor how long we will keep it, but I like tower defense style games in general. You also get a surprising amount of high quality stuff – minis, plastic markers and tokens, that would be easily 80$+ if you saw it on Kickstarter. 😂
