Command your own starship!

Have you ever dreamt of commanding your own spaceship? To boldly go where no one has gone before? If you answered yes to either of those, you should take a closer look at Starship Captains! 😄
After a very enjoyable demo at Gen Con last year, we finally had the chance to play it again!🥰

You play as a captain, managing your ship and crew, flying around between planets completing missions and upgrading your ship in an effort to be the best captain of the Federation! 🥇

It is a relatively lightweight euro game. Your different colored crew members allow you to do actions, so it's all about managing them like resources. Each round you get them all back expect 3, so the order in which you use them is important too. You also get some new cadets as the game goes on and can promote ensigns into commanders too. The crew are great little minis that add a lot to the tactility of the game! 🥰 I think the components and general look of the game is great.

As for the actions:
🚀 You can fly around the board, mainly to reserve missions for yourself. You get victory points for multiple things, but the main source are the mission cards.
💥 You can fight pirates to make traveling easier and earn yourself some bonuses in the process
🔌 You can get tech cards that give you new actions or abilities. These offer a fun mini-game as you can get bonuses if you complete icons on the sides of adjacent cards. Techs do a good job of raising replayabilty.
🔧 You can repair your ship. You often get damaged, which block valuable cargo or tech spaces, so you will repair often.

The decision space of Starship Captains isn't particularly huge and you can't really have too big of a strategy - it is more about a series of micro-decisions that you take every turn, that keeps you engaged. Playing well will reward you with more points, but the game is very accessible for newcomers. It's more about having a relaxed fun time, and enjoying the funny Star Trek-y vibe of the game. Ideal gateway game to lure people into euros! 😁
