Co-op tower defense

Co-op tower defense

Siege of Runedar is a co-op deck-builder tower-defense game. You play as dwarves, defending your fortress from endless waves of greenskin hordes. Your goal is to dig a tunnel to escape, but at the same time also defeat orcs and trolls who climb the walls, keeping them from reaching the treasury.

Players are equipped with a deck of 12 cards, of which 2 are Orc cards. During a turn, players draw five cards and for each Orc drawn, you have to draw a horde card accordingly, which determines the spawning location and movement of enemies. Your cards depict different action icons, and you have to select which action you want to use them for.

These are:
🏃 Move around the stronghold and even outside the walls.
⛏️ Dig the tunnel. If you remove all the rubble pieces, you discard a piece of the tunnel, then 2 Kobolds spawn who you have to defeat before digging deeper.
🔧 Gather wood, iron or leather, depending on the workshop you are in. Then you can place these on cards of the upgrade board. If you fill these up completely, you can get new cards for your deck (you have to remove another card so your deck always has 12 cards).
⚔️ Melee attack by rolling dice according to the attack value - only if you share a location with the targets.
🏹Shoot by rolling dice according to the attack value - only from one of the towers.

💬 The game has the usual Pandemic-style game flow, and it scales well with player count (as bad things happen during the turn of every player). You always have to puzzle out the best course of action depending on the board state and the cards you have in your hand. It would work splendidly, however for us the dice completely ruin the fun. You might make the best decisions in a tight situation, then get screwed and miss all your attacks. Digging out a tunnel as a main goal is also a bit monotonous - you keep having to go back to that room and do the same action over and over again.
Otherwise I’d love the idea of the game - it’s also clever how the game box itself becomes the fortress you are defending. I just wish the output randomness could be mitigated.
