Climb that monster!

Climb that monster!

Maul Peak 🏔️ is an asymmetrical 2-player game of tactical combat. The Grizzar 🐻, a tribe of bears is fighting against Guardians 👹. The premise of the game is super cool and the theme is implemented well. 🤩 The little bear meeples are tiny compared to the guardian they are fighting - and they actually have to climb up on the guardian and hurt its limbs in order to bring it down!

One player controls the Grizzar, the other chooses a Guardian out of 4. 🧐 You each have a deck of cards at your disposal to interact with the game. Most cards depict 2 actions and you can only perform one of them, so this brings an interesting hand-management aspect to the game.

There are two boards in play: a 3x3 grid where you are both maneuvering around, plus the guardian board that the Grizzar can climb to attack the different parts of the monster. The game structure is quite simple: on your turn you play as many actions/cards as you are allowed (usually 3), then draw back up to your hand size. Then the other player acts.

The Grizzar have multiple fighters that can be summoned throughout the game. 💪 They have different abilities that are all pretty essential. Their cards allow them to move around, generate rage, leap onto the guardian, use magic abilities and do melee attacks. They can only win if they defeat the guardian by filling every health spot on the guardian boards with damage tokens.

The Guardians all have their unique decks and mechanics. 🤩 They win by either knocking out every bear, or by reaching their unique win conditions. Their cards correspond to their special abilities they have.

🫣 For now we are having some issues with the balance - meaning both balance of win chance, and balance of fun. It might just be our first impressions, but Guardians are much more fun to play, and the 4 you choose from are quite different too. It also seems pretty impossible to win as the bears, though that may be intentional to bring a feeling of high stakes “fight for your life”.

The production quality is excellent though.🥰 The screen printed tokens are very nice and we really love the artwork as well!
