Build even more pyramids!

Terra Pyramides is a relatively simple and abstract game of constructing pyramids. 🙂 Each turn you just place down a tile, then activate the icons of a row of contiguous tiles next to the new tile. The stone, workers and gold you gather this way are then used to claim building sites and construct pyramids - the higher the better! It’s easy to learn but you need some spatial awareness to notice good opportunities. If you do want to increase complexity, the game comes with additional modules you can add! ✌️

Building the Great Pyramids
Ever since I saw Terra Pyramides at the booth of Korea Boardgames last SPIEL, I have been excited to get my hands on it. I love Egyptian themes, so a game about building pyramids is awesome. 😊 It is also a game by Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer, creators of many

The modules are weirdly hidden away in envelopes. ✉️ These aren’t some secret legacy things to be unlocked, it’s basically just hidden to avoid confusing new players with the additional components.

The first module introduces Grave Goods: ⚱️ a new sarcophagus symbol can be on tiles - if you activate one of these, you go up on a track, that has a kind of majority scoring at the end. Interestingly, the furthest you are away from other players on the track, the more points you get. The Horus Eye 👁️ symbols that just gave you gold in the simple game now move your victory point marker forward, and you only get gold when you pass certain thresholds. This means you have much less ‘joker’ resources to help out.

The second module is played on the other side of the game board which depicts the Nile, and it adds a bunch of tiles with Oases. 🏝️ Two new tracks are introduced with this: first is the amount of Oases you activate, the other is how far your ship 🛶 has sailed along the Nile, by activating Nile tiles. These tracks give you points depending on your highest pyramid or the amount of pyramids built. Additionally there are 6 cards that will be scored by whoever has best completed its condition.

💬 The core gameplay remains unchanged, but scoring is much more nuanced. Some combos become harder to notice, as you can activate tiles over the Nile, and I feel you are more short on resources with the addition of new tiles. Even though you play with more tiles, the game still ends after placing a set amount, so game length stays the same.

Ultimately it’s cool to have some variety to spice up this otherwise awesome game. 😉
