Bluffs, mind games and laughs
šļøAgent Avenue is a small box duel game of strategic bluffing and set-collection. It is from the team that created the insanely fun Mindbug too! Donāt let the tranquil look of the suburbs fool you, this is actually a showdown of cunning spies. š„· The game is learned in minutes: your goal is to catch the opponentās meeple on the central rondel, and to do that you will be collecting cards that move you forward clockwise. However while this is simple in principle, it is not that simple in practice! š¤
Players hold 4 cards in their hands, and on their turn they have to choose 2 of them and play 1 facedown and 1 faceup on the table. Their opponent gets to pick one of these, then they both activate their new card. This I-split-you-choose decision during the turns is the heart of the game and source of the fun and laughs. š After picking, players always draw back to 4 cards.
To understand why this is so fun you have to see some of the cards. For example the first Double Agent card you put into your tableau moves you backwards once, but the second one moves you 6 forward. The Codebreaker doesnāt move you at all, however if you get the 3rd one you immediately win the game! Alternatively there is the Daredevil that moves you 2 or 3 spaces, but the third one loses you the game - which is why itās clever to try to get your opponent to draft them from you. š There are 6 copies of most cards so itās hard to know what card your opponent played facedown. š If the deck runs out, then whoever is closest to the other wins the game - so there are actually multiple victory conditions that keep you both on your toes!
An advanced mode is also included in the game (which I would recommend to always include). This introduces 4 black market š° spaces on the rondel. If you exactly land on a space you can choose from the display of black market cards. These offer interesting ongoing effects and possibly even more victory conditions that break the rules! Even more fun and mindgames! š
The game is lightning fast and both fun and funny. Itās a great design that we can recommend for any fan of duel games and strategic bluffing! š„°
