Baghdad, the city of Rondel

Baghdad, the city of Rondel

Let’s talk again about 🕌Baghdad: The City of Peace! We sat down to it expecting a lot thanks to the designer duo of Fabio Lopiano and Nestore Mangone and we weren’t let down! 😁 The result of their cooperation is again an engaging midweight euro with lots of fun decisions to make.

The cards 🃏 create  an engaging action selection system. Timing really matters and you really have to plan well in advance as cards provide you both the symbols necessary to do actions and objectives you need (and want to!) to complete by the time they slide off your board - which takes 3 turns. ☝️ Playing things in the correct order is essential, and you have to synchronize this all with the rondel movement on the main board too! A reward one objective gives you, might also help you achieve another objective, which can lead to fun combos. 😉

Tiles you gather from the main rondel satisfyingly fill up your player board. With the first few tiles not much happens, but then later you start triggering bonuses between tiles. You also fill the quadrants of the rondel with buildings throughout the game. You can do bonus actions according to your building when visiting said quadrants. I really appreciate this interconnectedness of the game elements! 😊

The game has a nice simple flow, though sometimes turns can be slower if you have to think a few turns in advance. 🕰️ We only played 2p games and they can go for 2 hours - though we aren’t the fastest players out there. I think that could definitely be lowered with more practice.

We really enjoyed this prototype copy from @alleycatgames but can’t wait to actually play the final copy whenever the game is fulfilled. 🥳

Baghdad Prototype Preview
TL;DR I would classify Baghdad as a mid-weight euro, but with a disclaimer that you can get lost in a bit of analysis paralysis, as there is a lot of advance planning required. You can’t just haphazardly play cards and do actions if you want to do well.
