An introductory euro of Witches

🔮 Witchdom is a game that I would call a “gateway euro”. It has a lot of interesting game mechanics like deck-building, hand management, set collection, resource management, multi-use cards - yet it’s very accessible and packaged in a cute box with whimsical art. 1-5 players lead their own coven of witches 🧙🏻♀️, recruiting new members, gathering ingredients and magical trinkets, and brewing potions. The goal is simple: become the most revered clan of witches! 😉
A turn is really easy: 👉Either play a witch card to draft things and potentially brew a potion, or rest to claim back every card you used since your last rest action.
The way cards and drafting works is very clever however! 😊
The game board is split up into 3 rows, each row holding resource tokens, witch cards and potion cards. 🧐 When you play a witch, it shows from which rows it can take things and how many. You get to choose what to take from those rows.
🍄Resources are needed to complete potion recipes.
🧙🏻♀️Witch cards are new “workers” for your deck, but they are also essential to finish a potion of their color.
⚗️You can take potion cards which show recipes to complete. These are your main source of points.
🕯️Alternatively you can take a potion card but flip it over to its tool side. Tools are another component for potions and add a set collection element.
🦇Finally, witch cards show animal familiars on their back that you can use as an additional module for more set collection.
This drafting system works smoothly and makes the simple drafting more worthwhile. 🙂 It also helps that cards multi-use, so there are some interesting layers to your choices. You are also racing for some objectives, which can only be completed by the fastest player. Completing enough of these is the end game trigger (or alternatively if a decks run out).
💬Witchdom is ideal for introducing new players to board gaming - and to some euro mechanics. 😁 The box advertises a 30-60 minute playtime, which is actually a good approximation. Light, fast, and fun. Even if it’s a bit on the simple side for us.
