After Hegemony comes...
If you have played ⛑️ Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory, then 🌎 World Order might look familiar. This is the next game from Hegemonic Project , the creators of Hegemony, but this time instead of tackling the struggles of the different classes of society, the focus shifts to geopolitical jockeying. Players slip into the roles of the world’s superpowers and duke it out in a tug-of-war of political influence, economy and military might.😉 In a nutshell, this is a euro game for 2-4 players with area-control and a card action-selection system with deckbuilding.
World Order has a big dose of asymmetry in it, but nowhere near as much as Hegemony had. 👉Every player abides by the same rules and have the same goals: Primarily having the most influence in the regions of the map. The starting conditions are different however - the resources, production capabilities and allies are what you would expect from real-world politics. There is actually a 72 (❗ 🤯) pages long booklet detailing all kinds of concepts regarding the topics that the game showcases. Thanks to the deep and thorough research done by the creators, the gameplay feels very thematic as well, especially for a euro game. You kind of feel like a president making impactful decisions and having a hard time finding the best course of action.
The game is played over 6 rounds. Most essential are the 2 scorings that take place at the end of the 3rd and 6th round. 🧐 The other rounds before/after are basically a preparation to position yourself in the best possible way to come out on top in scoring. Improve your deck and your resource output, gather allies and invest in the different regions of the world.
While there is no direct combat, you do struggle with military threat from others, so placing out military power plays a role, but the biggest source of points are winning the majority contests of influence in the major regions. It’s challenging to successfully juggle this all.
World Order is currently live on Kickstarter, so if you are interested in the game you can have a closer look there. 😉 We’ll be back with a deeper look at the gameplay mechanics next week. 😉
