About Clash of Cultures

Clash of Cultures is a true 4X civilization building game. You will play through 6 ages, eXploring, eXpanding, eXploiting and eXterminating, while trying to eke out more points than your opponents. We have been interested in Clash of Cultures for a long time and since hearing about Monumental Edition it turned into hype. Did it live up to the hype? I think so! 🥳

This game has an incredible table presence. The colors on the map tiles, the beautiful miniatures moving around on it and the huge tech tree on your player board - it delivers an amazing overall look. 🤩

You have interesting and hard decisions throughout the game, as you have a limited amount of actions but a hundred things you want to do – I love this about games. It makes you want to replay them over and over. 🙃 Resource management is also an important part.

The card play has some interesting twists too. You have Action cards that could be used when certain conditions are met or saved up to use in combat as Tactic cards. The objective cards are also split into two parts, so maybe if one goal isn’t feasible for your current play-style you could go for the other.

Event cards spice things up every now and then. They could either help you or make your life worse – you can never be sure. They also spawn and move barbarian troops, or could bring looting pirates to your shores. Got to watch your back! 🙀

The tech tree holds some puzzles too – what to research and when? What would help in your situation the most? Or maybe you need certain advances to achieve an Objective? Are you mobilizing for war and need some bonuses to aid you in your endeavor? Decisions upon decisions. 🧐

Combat might be a divisive element however. Although the game is rooted in some euro mechanics, combat is purely dice-based 🎲. You can influence things with Tactics cards, but if you are unlucky, you have no chance. 😞 Still I enjoyed most of our combats, as the dice rolls make battles exciting spectacles – we did have a few sour moments though. 😅

If you check some comparison images, they truly improved every element of the game – at least visually. Clash of Cultures delivers on its promise of being a truly fun 4X game. 👍🔥
