A monochromatic adventure

Grab your shields and sharpen your swords, because we are going on an adventure! 💪 In Hero’s Journey you and up to 5 friends take part in either a randomly generated adventure or a customly set up quest. It is mainly a card game, though you do use dice 🎲 for many things, including combat resolution.

As you start out, you each get a random Hero card, plus a random Loot and Quality card - of course you will be gathering many of these during your adventure, and you will need them if you want to be able to defeat the bosses. ☝️ Loot cards are either one use items, or powerful equipment that aids you in some way. Quality cards are interesting because they could be a positive or negative trait, or even an activatable ability. 🧐

In a default run you have to survive 3 rounds, which are made up of several Encounters, finished by a Boss battle. Encounters could be a random Events, a Location, or a Monster to fight. Location cards stay out until you draw a new one and they will modify some part of the game. If you encounter a Monster or the Boss then combat starts. 🙀

⚔️Combat is pretty straightforward. Enemy cards will tell you who the enemy will target and what they will do - mostly trying to kill you. ☠️ (But don’t fret, if your friends survive the combat, you get to draw a new Hero and continue the adventure). On your turn you can either use one of your cards or attack the enemy. You roll a 6-sided die, and see what happens - their cards show what value is considered a Hit, a Block or a Counter. Longer fights can get a bit dull especially if you don’t have any tools to mitigate rolls, but there is a cool variety in the monsters you will face.

💬The scaling has some issues - I think if you have 6 adventurers, the game will be a lot easier than with 4 for example. There are some adjustments for 3 or less heroes, but it doesn’t change up much.

The beauty of Hero’s Journey lies in its variability and rogue-like nature. 😊 Each adventure you will play another Hero with different Qualities and collect different Loot, while also the Events and Monsters you face will keep changing too, so every adventure will be different! 💪
