A beautiful mushroom game

Have you heard of Mycelia? We were lucky to get the chance to try the prototype of this upcoming game of @splitstonegames before its Kickstarter launch on the 7th of September! 🥰

Mycelia is a dynamic area-control game of mushrooms 🍄 with beautiful illustrations - though quite abstract, it does simulate the life cycle of mushrooms, as they spread with spores, grow and finally decay.

Set on a modular board consisting of triangular tiles, Mycelia's gameplay is easy to learn:
On your turn you pick 2 different actions out of 6, then the next player is up.

Let’s see what you can do in the game. 🕵️
Players start by placing their “Mother Mushroom” on the board. You can move around with it, either to spread spores or to block other player’s networks and mushrooms. Since mushrooms reward you with points, your primary goal is to grow them by playing their cards and paying their cost - which can be tricky! ☝️

You pay for mushrooms by removing spore cubes from appropriately colored tiles, if they are part of your network: these could be spores of your opponents too, if you "invade" their network! And how do you get your spores on the board? 🧐 Well, by choosing a mushroom to spread them, and rolling the “wind die”: this brings some randomness into the game, so you have consider your choices. In case the wind isn’t in your favor, you could end up with less spores or could accidentally help your opponents.

As you can only have 5 mushrooms in play, there is an essential mechanic: decaying. 🪦 If you’ve spored twice with a mushroom, you can choose to remove it and tuck its card under the board to activate its decay ability - which is either a one-time or ongoing effect. This introduces some engine building.

Finally, you can draw cards to get access to new mushrooms or even extend the board with new triangle tiles.

The structure of the game is streamlined, but choosing which actions to take has its challenges, and the board state will keep changing thanks to your opponents. This makes Mycelia a highly dynamic and interactive game. As we are reaching the character limit we will have to follow up with a future post. ✌️
